Progress Over Perfection

About 15 years ago, I stumbled across the term ‘Quantity Over Quality.’ At first, this went against everything I knew about work and life. What good is quantity if there is no quality? At the same time, I was talking to a friend about the concept and he said that in Alcohol Anonymous, they had a similar phrase – Progress Not Perfection.

Over the years, my use of the term has morphed into Progress Over Perfection.

But who cares about the words? Why am I telling you about this? The best way for me to tell you is to cheat because someone has stated it a lot better and eloquently than I could ever do.

There is a book entitled, Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking. In this book, there is a story of a ceramics class.

This article covers the story as well as why the concept of Quantity Over Quality is something to live by.

I have been reminded of this concept as I start this blog. It’s been slower than I expected to write up some posts. Something has been holding me back. Finally, I just told myself to ‘write something. Anything. You can and will edit it anyway.’

In doing that, I’ve cranked out multiple posts over the last couple of days. That’s more than I wrote in the last two weeks.

I come back to Progress Over Perfection regularly. Honestly, I should write it down on a stickie and put it on the bathroom mirror.
