Try Being a Really Bad Chessmaster

For most of my life, I never got into video games. In college, I had a bunch of friends that came from the Jersey shore (yes, that place) and video games were a huge part of their childhood. It was at that point that I ended up playing games like Robotron and Crystal Castles.

I would say I had a shortish addiction to both. In fact, we played Robotron so much that some of us would suffer in pain which we appropriately named, ‘Robotron elbow.’

Many years later, along with the masses, I got addicted to Words With Friends. I couldn’t get enough of it. And then I had to stop cold turkey. I spent way too much time on it. I’ve fallen off the wagon a couple of times but nothing that’s going to make me put on a hairshirt.

When I was young, I played a lot of chess. I felt like I got pretty decent at it for a kid but I probably only played a handful of games past the age of 12.

Recently, I heard about a game called Really Bad Chess. I’m not entirely addicted to it but I found myself playing it for an hour last night. It’s an odd take on chess in that you get a bunch of random pieces to start, lined up in 2 rows like a regular chess board. Your computer generated opponent usually has a different set of random pieces.

Because the pieces are lined up randomly, it’s not uncommon for your computer opponent to have a bishop in the front row to start. In my very first game, the computer took my knight on its very first move. That should’ve sent my iPhone through the window but I couldn’t help find it as a huge challenge to beat the game.

Alas, for the first couple of weeks, the computer opponent has been consistently taking me to the cleaners. It’s aggravating yet a blast at the same time.

Talk about a challenge.

Update: I became addicted to it so much so that I deleted it from my phone. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t try it because it’s a lot of fun but I now can honestly say that I have an addictive personality when it comes to certain games.
